Jaydene Elvin, PhD

Coordinator

Jaydene Elvin, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and TESOL Coordinator in the Department of Linguistics at California State University, Fresno. She is also the Coordinator of the Hub for Language Teaching and Learning and Co-Director of Act Like a Teacher. She earned her MA in TESOL (2011) from Western Sydney University and her PhD (2016) from the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, Western Sydney University, Australia. Jaydene’s research and teaching interests include: second language speech perception, spoken word recognition and production; acoustic-phonetics in under-described languages; and drama-based techniques for teacher training and its implementation in ESL classrooms. As part of her Act Like a Teacher program, Jaydene utilizes drama based techniques to help pre-service and novice teachers to move, speak, think and react like teachers. She also provides workshops that promote the mental well-being of teachers and social emotional learning for teachers and students.

Cheryl Chan, MA

Assistant Coordinator

Cheryl Chan, MA, has over twenty-five years of experience in the field of English Language Teaching. After earning a BA in Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley and an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from UCLA, she taught in Mexico and then Germany. She went on to teach English as a Second Language at the adult school, community college, California State University, and the University of California levels. In addition, she taught undergraduate TESL training courses at California State University, Fresno. Most recently, she served as the director of the American English Institute, California State University, Fresno’s intensive English program, where she facilitate the English language learning of international students from around the world as well as the training of novice English as a Second Language teachers. Her areas of interest are second language teaching and learning, teacher psychology, and teacher training. She is a dog person who has a healthy respect for cats.

Alyssa Tobar

EMLS and Linguistics Instructor
Fresno City College

Alyssa Tobar believes that studying and learning a second language is an essential experience for everyone. She started teaching in 2014, and has taught a variety of subjects and levels. Her favorite subject to teach is Reading, but she enjoys teaching almost any subject! Alyssa has experience as an administrator, teacher, and student, so she uses these experiences to inform her classroom policies and teaching philosophies. She loves languages and majored in Linguistics at California State University - Fresno, where she earned a Bachelor and a Master of Arts, Linguistics degree. Alyssa is excited to get to know her students and help them reach their goals!
